Survive This Montreal Winter In Style

Wardrobe tips to help you stay warm and stylish.
Survive This Montreal Winter In Style

It's finally here! The snow has fallen, and you know what that means. If you've been holding off from busting out the winter jacket and a pair of water proof boots, now's officially the time! Montreal winters bring more than cold air, snow and ice than we can handle. Dressing to accommodate the weather is one of many burdens we have to deal with. You know you'll have to plan ahead an extra ten minutes  before leaving your house in the morning, just so you can really bundle up and make sure you're all zipped from head to toe. After leaving your house, the bus ride to school or work won't be too fun either. Space on public transit cuts down by almost half, due to the mass of everyone's over sized winter coats. While its often tempting to hide under a big sweater and a long coat, let it be known that staying stylish this winter is very possible and highly encouraged.

1. The Ski Sweater

Warm, and colorful, having at least one of these sweaters is a definite must this winter. But don't mistake these stylish sweaters for the Christmas gift that your grandma knit for you last December. Decorated with vintage inspired designs, ski sweaters make for both a cozy and trendy garment. If you plan to spend your weekends at the top of a mountain this winter, the versatility of these sweaters will let you go from the slopes right to sipping on a sifter of cognac by a warm fire.

2. Layers on Layers

Not only will layering ensure maximum warmth, there's no better time of year to rock cropped lengths on top of over sized t-shirts. Layering your tops can also give you the chance to add a pop of color under a dark outfit, during a gloomy winter day. Still trying to figure out how to effectively color block your ensemble? Do it with your layers! Slip on a longer bright red t-shirt and throw a navy blue pullover on top. Think contrasting colors, and don't let the dark mood affect your garment shades.

3. The Classic Duffle Coat

A preppy duffle coat with a wooden- like row of toggles is among our top picks for this winter. Sure a feather- stuffed coat will protect you to no end, but think of how undeniably sweaty you'll be feeling after a long ride on the crowded bus. Believe it or not, duffle coats are actually built quite constructively, with coarse, thick wool, and are known for their warmth and roominess. Not only are they notably stylish, these jackets are beyond practical. Long enough to cover your bare bum and flat enough so you can fit a knapsack over your shoulders, a duffle coat is perfect for this winter.

4. The Snood Scarf

Otherwise known as the infinity scarf, this accessory is essential for both men and women. The scarf with no end first made its appearance towards the end of last winter, and it's not going anywhere! Most infinity scarves are knit, so you know that their quality are up to par when resisting the pinch that comes with the winter air. As well, unlike most scarves, this one's bound to stay with you forever. With the snood scarf, you won't have to worry about it slipping off and getting lost like other standard scarves. Wrap the infinity scarf as many times as you want and as tightly around your neck to ensure maximum protection.

5. The Plaid Flannel

A stylish alternative to a standard cardigan, most plaid flannels are super warm and always colorful. Feel like a lumberjack for a day, and sport a red plaid button down. You're bound to have one of these softer- than- Kleenex shirts hanging in your closet, if not two. Not only do they make the perfect last minute slip on, they're also extremely versatile. Keep it open to show off a solid tee underneath, or button it up and feel its cozy fabric all over.

6. A Pair of Grown Up Gloves

Do you often hesitate paying for a pair of gloves, because you know they'll go missing in a week's time? Our advice? Invest in a high quality pair. Although they might be a bit pricey, knowing that your hand warmers costed you more than usual, will most likely make you take extra care to not leave them lying around. Plus, they'll probably last you a lot longer than any other pair of cheap gloves you've purchased before.

7. The Patterned Accessory

Cheetah prints and army patterns shouldn't be solely reserved for fall weather. When the mood outside is so dull, a pop of crazy pattern is necessary. Nothing screams Montrealais more than an eccentric and bold print matched with a mostly solid outfit. Something about dark skies and shorter days seems to make people dress in less than exciting colors. Don't let the weather get the best of your mood, or your fashion choices. Play up a tedious ensemble with an electrifying pattern or print.

8. The Opinionated Beanies

It's no doubt that wearing a toque is necessary during the coldest of days in Montreal. A warm winter hat is essential for providing a sufficient amount of insulation. Walking down the streets of Montreal, it seems that people like to get extra creative with their choice of hats. Placed right on the top of your head, it is often the first thing a person will notice when passing by. Living in a highly democratic and incredibly opinionated city (just ask the Angry Anglo), a beanie with an edgy slogan written across the top seems more than fitting.

Dressing for the winter doesn't have to be boring. Just because you'll be hidden under a winter coat for the majority of time, adding a spice of style to your bundled look will surely make you stand out. Did we miss any winter wardrobe must- haves?
