As the Réseau express métropolitain (REM) gears up for its grand launch, downtown Montreal is about to be catapulted into a retail orbit previously unreachable without a car. The new light rail system promises to whisk you from the city core and deposit you at the doorstep of the South Shore's most enticing boutiques — all in a matter of minutes.

From American Eagle's stylish comfort wear to PUMA's sport-lifestyle fusion, brands previously uncharted from downtown are now just a few train stops away. Here are some of the shopping landscapes that await you at the end of a quick REM ride:

When you think of Montreal’s South Shore, you probably think of traffic and travel time. But the Réseau express métropolitain (REM) is changing that and unlocking a part of the map that many can’t reach. There are five REM stations opening on July 31, but it’s the three in the middle that have the hottest new events, activities, and dinner spots to check out.

Île-des-Soeurs will become a quick six-minute ride from Gare-Centrale, where you can go biking or rent boats to explore beneath the Samuel-de-Champlain Bridge. There are also restaurants, stores, and Strøm Spa for those who want to shop or relax.

Montrealers have their pick of date-worthy restaurants to treat a romantic interest on a night out. For those who live off-island, the options can feel somewhat slimmer. But a new ranking by dating app Bumble and online reso site OpenTable finds two spots in Laval and Brossard are among the best in Canada. According to the list, vegan restaurant LOV DIX30 on the South Shore and Sterlings Steakhouse in Laval strike the right balance between tasty food that can impress a potential SO and relaxed ambiance to counter the awkwardness that can come with an IRL meet-up.

North of Montreal, Sterlings has a reputation as one of the top three steakhouses in the region. The decor is upscale but the atmosphere is casual. The menu is stacked with wood-charcoaled meat and fish options, like the eight-ounce filet mignon with melting brie on garlic mashed potatoes, vegetables and port sauce ($58) or the grilled salmon fillet with veggies and wild rice ($36). You can get your steak anywhere from blue (grilled on the outside and completely red in the centre) to Pittsburgh pink (charred on the outside with your choice of inside texture). A wide selection of wines is also available to pair with your meal.

Sometimes you need to tear down before you can build back up. To improve the shopping experience and retail value of storefront locations, that's what the operators of Dix30 plans to do, effectively trimming the own hedges by tearing down certain areas of the Brossard shopping complex.

Details of the Dix30 demolition were unveiled byLa Presse, as the news organization obtained documents stating that come fall 2016, several different stores and restaurants will be demolished to make way for new improvements.

Alright now try not to drool too much when you read this - we know, it's hard - but Montreal first-ever week-long bacon festival is happening right now. That's right, an entire week dedicated to the crispy, tasty, delicious, heavenly-goodness that is bacon. I don't think anything has ever sounded more perfect.

In honour of International Bacon day on September 5, Quartier DIX30 is partnering with 14 of its restaurants to host Bacon Week from September 6-12. Each restaurant will create a special bacon-inspired dish that will be available for you to chow down on throughout the week. 14 dishes in 7 days? That's totally do-able, especially if you're as committed to bacon as I am.

Now that's a sight we like to see here in Montreal, the Habs enjoying some well-deserved rest after kicking ass in the first round of the playoffs. Max Pacioretty, Nathan Beaulieu, Brendan Gallagher, Dustin Tokarski and Devante Smith-Pelly were chilling at the Mile Public House in Quartier DIX30 near the Canadiens' training facility, and look how well behaved they are.

Not a single alcoholic beverage on the table, so that means this picture was either taken before 9:00am or we have ourselves a very disciplined team who take the playoffs extremely seriously.

Developmer Carbonleo, progenitor of Brossard’s Dix30 mall, is currently planning a new mall in the Town of Mont Royal. According to the Gazette, the three-million-square-foot complex (named Quinze40), would be built just southwest of Décarie Boulevard. It’d undoubtedly bring an increase in revenue to the area, perhaps even one big enough to financially justify its $1.6 billion cost.
