A social media ad calling for plasma donors has garnered hundreds of "likes" and "shares." But it has also sparked controversy with over a dozen commenters accusing Héma-Québec of homophobic practices that exclude gay men.

"Quebec needs plasma donors," the sponsored post says. The caption reads: "Plasma donation changes the lives of thousands of Quebecers. Plan your visit to a donation centre near you."

Speaking as a gay man, Montreal is pretty much the mecca for all-things queer in Canada. Montreal's LGBTQ+ scene is just a little more alive (and far more unique) than other cities, so it only makes sense that Montreal is going to play host to the nation's first-ever "Canada Pride."

To coincide with Montreal's 375th birthday celebrations, the LGBTQ+ festival that's going to take over the city in summer 2017 will last a full ten days.

Montreal's many bathhouses (and there are a lot, 13 in total) are places of mystery for many. To hetero-folks, a bathhouse, at least the gay ones, stand as sketchy monuments to random sex with strangers. And in all honesty, they're not that wrong.

Even a gay guy like myself has a highly sexualized conception of "the bathhouse." Personally, I've never been, but I've heard and seen enough (read: porn) to have a general, if not misinformed idea of what goes on.

When I tell straight people I met a guy on Grindr, their response every time is: "isn't that just for hooking up?" Well, yes, it's mainly used for some casual play, but there are a ton of Grindr users who actually seeking something a bit more legit off the app. Maybe not a boyfriend, but something a bit more fulfilling than a quickie.

The same goes for all the gay dudes who go to clubs in the Village, or hit up sites ManHunt or the like. Straight folk might think gay guys just have tons of random sex all the time (some do, to be fair) but we also go on dates, just like everybody else.

Let's just get this out of the way first: Montreal has a better gay scene (at least for dudes) than Toronto.

There, I said it. This isn't some comparison piece where I'm trying to choose a winner or rip on either city. Rather, I just want to talk about some of the hilarious (and sometimes annoying) differences between what it's like to be a gay dude in Montreal versus Toronto.

Bisexuality. It's the B in LBGT. And yet there are still a lot of people - straight AND gay - who seem to think that it doesn't really exist.

Bi guys get their share of crazy bullsh*t thrown at them, but today, let's take a look at what the ladies have to deal with.

Go to the Village once, and you'll pretty much have the same experience every single time. Drink, dance, get sloppy, repeat. Unity, Sky, Apollon, and the other Village staples are all fun, they can just get a little monotonous. Broaden your Montreal queer horizons by getting out of the Village with some very legit bars and events catering to Montreal's queer community. The Village is outdated anyway.

Years ago, gender was a fixed identity and your private parts pretty much placed you into the societal role of male and female. Nowadays, at least in some western societies, gender is seen as a much more fluid construct, and individuals are no longer fully chained to a single role.

The lines between genders has been blurred, but that isn't to say people aren't still prescribed social roles based on anatomy. Working towards fully shifting the mind of society to a fluid concept of gender, Montreal photographer JJ Levine has created the photo series Alone Time.
