Mornings are far from fun. You're tired, groggy, and (perhaps most anger-inducing) you're really hungry. But there's one solution to making any morning move into the realm of amazing: a quality Montreal breakfast sandwich.
Now, we're not talking about a $2 egg McMuffin or Timatin, we mean hearty breakfast sandwiches crafted by one of Montreal's many amazing eateries.
Of course, not all breakfast sandwiches are created equal, and some will make your morning way more amazing. Here are 12 of the best you can eat in the city to ensure you always start your day off right.
Dep Le Pick Up
Everyone's favourite dep-eatery offers what's essentially a breakfast-BLT, with an added egg rounding out Dep Le Pick Up's breakfast sandwich. Not to be ignored is the more esoteric breakfast taco plate, featuring two tacos with eggs, cheddar, and veggies, with added bacon being a delicious option.
Don't expect to enjoy Nouveau Palais's breakfast sammie with your hands, because the Lumberjack Sandwich is a fork and knife affair. Two cornmeal pancakes act as the "bread" in this sandwich, with egg, bacon, and plenty of cheese in the middle, all doused with plenty of maple syrup, of course.
Since 1942, the much-adored brunch eatery Beautys has been serving their "Beautys Special," a Montreal classic of smoked salmon, cream cheese, tomato, and onion all on a bagel. Simple, tasty, and filling, everything you want out of a morning meal.
Forget bread, donuts are where it's at, and Chez Boris proves that fact with their breakfast "beignewich." Two freshly made donuts are sandwiched between egg, bacon, and cheese, creating a sinfully-and-slightly-sweet breakfast meal that is entirely unique.
Known as "the Creation," Cosmos breakfast sandwich features a fried egg, salami, bacon, lettuce, tomato, and melted Kraft cheese placed between two pieces of toast bread. If you want to up your breakfast sandwich game a bit, the much-loved NDG diner would be happy to add in some sausage, which used to be a staple in the signature sammie.
If you're in need of a breakfast sandwich that will fill you up until lunch (and beyond) then you need only head to Bocadillo's. The Venezuelan eateries "Egg Sandwich" is a behemoth of a breakfast sammie, with lettuce, tomato, bacon, pesto sauce, sour cream dijon, and egg (obviously) making up the ingredient list. Best of all, you can order the egg-wich any time of the day, ideal for weekends.
Heavenly bliss takes the form of a breakfast sandwich at Patati Patata, as the Saint Laurent diner's "Special Luc" truly is a taste of the divine. Pretty much a western omelette put between toast bread, the Special Luc doesn't sound like much, but anyone who has had the breakfast sandwich will tell you otherwise.
No food is tastier, and filling, as a burrito, so why not have one for breakfast? A meat-and-beany burrito might not sound like the ideal morning meal, so good thing Le Cagibi crafts a breakfast version of the beloved Mexican meal. Better yet, Le Cagibi's breakfast burrito can be vegan-ized, being made with tofu instead of eggs.
La Binerie Mont-Royal
The Plateau's oldest eatery keeps it very classic when it comes to their breakfast sandwich, the Club Chummy, which features two scrambled eggs, bacon, tomato, and mayo, and served with fries and beans. Yes, it's pretty much a breakfast BLT like others on this list, but that doesn't make the Club Chummy any less delicious.
A haven for anyone with the munchies, Joe's Panini is the 24hr sandwicherie that is a saving grace when everything else is closed. Joe's also bridges the gap between late night and early mornings with their breakfast panini, a simple egg-filled sandwich that will start your day off right.
Heralded as one of the best bakeries in Montreal, Hof Kelsten also has a mean sandwich game, and you simply know the bread is going to be great. When it comes to breakfast, Hof Kelsten keeps it simple with their grilled cheese and egg sandwich, a comforting and altogether delicious sandwich that will hit you right in the hunger.
Okay, so I'm very aware that the above picture is not a sandwich, but it's the closest image one can really find of Resonance Café's breakfast sandwich, which is pretty everything on their vegan breakfast platter just in sandwich form. Resonance Café's vegan breakfast sammie includes cashew cheese, tomato, and a tofu "egg" scramble on grilled bread, served with homemade ketchup.
