The Biggest Public Library In Montreal Is Infested With Bed Bugs

The state-of-the-art Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec (BAnQ) adjacent to UQÀM's downtown campus is brimming with amenities for students, teachers, and the casual reader looking to escape the summer heat.

Unfortunately absent from its repertoire of resources, however, is bug spray.

The library is dealing with a widespread infestation of bed bugs.

Public libraries are known for their unusual activity and that's why we love them. Citizens frequent the insitutions as much for their prime people-watching potential as for their art and book collections.

But beg bugs take it to a new level of weird. Imagine coming home from the library with that book you've been dying to read only to discover that your loan came with a bonus of hundreds of tiny bugs. No thanks.

Because the bugs have swarmed the creases of the library's cushioned furniture, library workers have temporarily substituted the cozy seating for plastic chairs. What's worse? Bed bugs or reading on a cramped plastic chair?

Exterminators are attempting to get a hold on the situation. In the meantime, you can order books for easy pickup to avoid any risk of attracting some stray bed bugs. Other public library locations are also bed bug-free.

I got itchy just by writing this article.
