The Government of Canada Just Added Important Travel Advisories To Over 30 Countries

On July 19th, The Government of Canada updated its travel advisories page with an additional 31 countries.

The advisories range from 'exercise normal security precautions' (usually related to health risks) to 'avoid all travel' (usually due to violent crime and political instability).

Many of the countries on the list aren't regular tourist hotspots, but there were a few destinations that aredefinitely popular with Canadian travellers.

Since we're in the middle of the travel season, it's a good idea to check out the list and keep informed! You can see the entire list here.

United Kingdom

"Exercise a high degree of caution in the United Kingdom due to the threat of terrorism."

Egypt

"Exercise a high degree of caution in Egypt due to the unpredictable security situation and the threat of terrorism."

There are also certain areas that the Canadian Government advises to avoid all travel to due to terrorist activity and military operations.

  • The Sinai Peninsula (except Sharm el-Sheikh)

  • The Western desert and Libyan border area

Brazil

"Exercise a high degree of caution in Brazil due to high crime rates and regular incidents of gang-related and other violence in urban areas."

The Public Health Agency of Canada also advised travelers to use special health precautions for the Zika Virus. Women who plan to become pregnant or are currently pregnant should not travel to Brazil at all.

Costa Rica

"Exercise a high degree of caution in Costa Rica due to crime."

Travel Health Notice: Zika virus warning in effect.

Dominican Republic

"Exercise a high degree of caution in the Dominican Republic due to a high crime rate."

Travel Health Notice: Zika virus warning in effect.

There have been 28 reported deaths of Canadians in the Dominican in 2019.

Nicaragua

"Exercise a high degree of caution in Nicaragua due to the volatile security situation."

Travel Health Notice: Zika virus warning in effect.

Greece

"Take normal security precautions in Greece."

Greece has seen a rise in natural disasters. Some areas have been declared a state of emergency like Halkidiki after a violent storm knocked out some services. A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck the Attica region and was felt in Athens

Travellers are advised to contact their airlines to see if there are any interruptions.

United States

"Take normal security precautions in the United States."

The warning for the US is due to natural disasters like hurricanes, flooding, bushfires, and earthquakes.
