Since the beginning of the lockdown, morale has taken a serious hit — and a new study proves it. The Léger polling firm has revealed that the level of happiness in Quebec is the lowest ever recorded and 18 to 24-year-olds are the least happy.
On May 14, the company released an update to its Indice de Bonheur Léger (IBL) — or Happiness Index — which shows a major drop since the beginning of the pandemic two months ago. Prior to containment, the average IBL was 75.20.
It dropped to 69.60 for the period between March 13 and May 7.
This is the lowest recorded level since the launch of the Index in 2006. According to Léger, Quebecers' happiness is usually stable, between 75 and 76 points.
People aged 18 to 24 are the least happy right now: their IBL is now at 64.70 points.
Paradoxically, it is the elderly, who are much more affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, who are the least affected by the general decline in morale.
Among the 65 to 74-year-olds, the IBL has only fallen by 0.90 to 77.90. In comparison, the 35-44 age group has fallen by 9.56 points.

Léger identified six factors to explain the general decline in happiness among Quebecers:
a renouncement of the present;
a weakening of sentimental relationships;
a disturbed serenity;
and changes to the sense of freedom and dream of life.
According to the data, 47% of 18 to 24-year-olds are concerned about their physical safety and only 29% of them say they are living the life they dreamed.
Nevertheless, Léger also noted some positive changes in outlook among the population as a result of the pandemic.

Quebecers are now more concerned about the environmental or social impacts of their consumption habits.
As part of this study, the firm interviewed 657 Quebecers with a 34-question questionnaire.

Whether the arrival of warmer weather and the gradual deconfinement of Quebec has an effect on the popular mood remains to be seen.
