The Moon Is Getting Its Own Wi-Fi Network In 2019

Oh, what a world we live in.

It looks like the moon will be getting a mobile network next year, making it the first network of such in outer space.

Vodafone Germany, Nokia and carmaker Audi announced their collaboration to support the Mission to the Moon project.

The network will enable high-definition streaming from the lunar landscape back to earth in real-time.

During the announcement, Vodafoneappointed Nokia as the technology partner to develop a space-grade network, which is a small piece of tech hardware weighing less than a bag of sugar.

The project is expected to launch in 2019 from Cape Canaveral on a SpaceX Falcon rocket.

"This project involves a radically innovative approach to the development of mobile network infrastructure," Vodafone Germany Chief Executive Hannes Ametsreiter said. Source.

An executive involved said they made the decision to build a 4G space network instead of a new state-of-the-art 5G network, as 4G remains (currently) more stable, ensuring they would work from the lunar surface.

All I read here is that the moon was about to get a 5G network, and we're here hardly able to get cell reception on the majority of our metro lines.

Moon -1, Earth - 0.
