Yup, they're as dumb as you're probably expecting.
The Most Hackable Passwords People Are Using In 2019

The most commonly used password has not changed since 2013. Evidently, people are no wiser about cybersecurity than they were 6 years ago. This is surprising considering just how much private information we store across various accounts.

From online shopping accounts to online banking and tax filing, we type in a load of information into our online accounts that we don't want other people to access.

Cybersecurity experts have been begging people for years to stop using common passwords like "1234." And, according to lists of the most common passwords, people have not been listening.

TL;DR A newly released list of commonly used passwords shows that people still use ridiculously easy-to-guess passwords, and it is both hilarious and frightening.

In an era of online hackers and fake accounts, being vigilant online has never been more important, and part of a good internet practice is choosing passwords that are hard to guess.

According to SplashData, the most commonly used password between 2013 and 2018 has been 123456. A list released by National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) confirms that this password is still the most popular in the UK in 2019.

23.2 million Brits use the password 123456 for their accounts. The next most popular passwords, according to the NCSC, were:

  • 123456789 (7.7m accounts)
  • qwerty (3.8m accounts)
  • password (3.6m accounts)
  • 1111111 (3.1m accounts)

Another online survey was done by KeeperThe organisation analysed the information that was made public through data breaches and put together a list of the commonly used passwords in 2019.

Their full list of the 10 most popular online passwords in 2019 is as follows:

  1. 123456

  2. 123456789

  3. qwerty

  4. 12345678

  5. 111111

  6. 1234567890

  7. 1234567

  8. password

  9. 123123

  10. 987654321

The NCSC survey also released other common passwords in Britain. Interestingly, football-themed passwords are so popular that the NCSC has a separate section with the most commonly used football-themed passwords.

The most commonly used password, with 280,723 users, is liverpool, followed closely by chelsea and arsenal.

The NCSC survey also released the most popular musician-themed passwords: the most popular is blink182, used by 285,706. Other popular musicians include 50cent (191,153 accounts), eminem (167,983 accounts), metallica (140,841 accounts) and slipknot (140,833 accounts).

In an age of security breaches and hackers with password-cracking hardware and software, it is reckless for people to be using such flimsy, easy-to-guess passwords.

Use difficult-to-guess passwords, people!
