The Quebec Government Is Making You Pay A New "Netflix Tax" Starting In 2019

Everyone loves their Netflix. Most people I know watch Netflix every single day. What we would do without our ability to binge watch? At least in my situation, what I love most is how inexpensive their services are.

For real, if you think about it, for what we're getting the price is insanely low. Well, perhaps not for long, unfortunately.

The Quebec government is changing the rules when it comes to subscription video services. Starting next year, Netflix and other similar platforms are going to have to start collecting and paying the Quebec sales tax (QST).

Quebec's budget plan was released on Tuesday and it says that both Canadian and foreign countries who sell digital services to Quebecers have to register with the government as soon as their revenue exceeds $30,000 a year.

Essentially, this is happening because the government wants to get more tax money. They estimate that they'll be able to get $154.5 million more over the next five years.

It's easy to get angry about this, but by not taxing online sales, the government has actually been losing $270 million per year. So actually, when you think about it, it makes more sense that they want to implement this tax. It just kind of sucks for us.

So starting January 1, 2019,  your Netflix bill is going to increase by 9.975%. And actually, it doesn't only count for Netflix.  Amazon, Spotify, and iTunes will have to pay the tax as well (just to name a few).

Depending on which Netflix package you have, the increase in price will vary, but monthly, it won't be that huge of a difference. It's just when you add it all up that you'll start to notice your money drifting away.
