TL;DR Alexandre Bissonnette has been sentenced to life in prison for killing 6 people at a Quebec City mosque in 2017. There will not be a possibility for parole for 40 years.

Global News reporter Mike Armstrong related that, in judge's opinion, it would be "cruel" to not offer Bissonette a real possibility of parole.

29-year-old Bissonnette will be 67 when he becomes eligible.

The judge has just said he believes it would be fair to sentence Bissonnette to live in prison, without parole eligibility for 35 to 42 years. He says it would be cruel and unusual to not give the prisoner some hope that he could one day be free.

Bissonnette earlier pleaded guilty to six counts of first-degree murder, according to the Global News report.

These are the names of his six victims:

Ibrahima Barry
Mamadou Tanou Barry
Khaled Belkacemi
Abdelkrim Hassane
Azzedine Soufiane
Aboubaker Thabti

Their families were present in the courtroom as Huot delivered the sentence.

In January 2017, a gunman opened fire in a Quebec City mosque, killing six people. The shooter is being sentenced today, expected to get the harshest sentence in Canadian history.

Prosecutors found the shooter was obsessed with far-right online content, especially Ben Shapiro.
