There Are Way Too Many Restaurants In Montreal

Okay so it's no news to anyone that Montreal has a whole lot of restaurants. But did you know that Montreal has more per person than anywhere else in North America?

According to Tourism Montreal, our city has the record number of restaurants per capita in North America. There is, of course, a lot of debate with huge cities like New York and Toronto, but either way, we are freaking up there!

It may even be an issue because apparently anyone who asks for a restaurant permit in Montreal pretty much gets it. From 2005 to 2012, the number of new restaurants has increased by 31%!

High-end dining is becoming less and less popular, whereas casual dining is on the rise. People love going out for a quick bite in their sweatpants!

There are too many restaurants and not enough people to eat in them. Competition is getting too much and businesses are suffering.

Montreal restaurant owners like Carlos Ferreira and Sylvie Lachance are upset that restaurants are popping up all over the place. They say that people are opening up shop just to catch a trend. New owners don't even know the business.

I'm all for having great food, but not if it means that businesses can't survive. I'd rather have Montreal restaurants staying open!
