Things To Do In Montreal When Your Friends Come To Visit For The Weekend

Having friends visit you is always fun. No matter where you live, but in Montreal particularly because it such an amazing place to see. But it can become over whelming trying to think of what to do. Obviously it’s nice to do the normal shiz, like Mont Royal, Saint Cats and Old Port, but if you live here then you know there is so much more to see and experience. I’ve listed a few things that are maybe not the first places you’d think to take your friends, but are super fun and still hold the essence of Montreal.

1. Where To Drink

Obviously if your friends are comin’ down, they’re probably looking to party. So where do you get your drink on, when you wanna get nice and shwasted? I recommend staying away from the general pub and bar scene. Don’t get me wrong it’s fun but it can get a lil’ to rowdy when you’re trying to spend time with your friends. If you like cocktails then I will forever recommend La Distillerie. The Cucumber Ricky is my personal favourite drink they have, but you can get everything from sweet, sour to bizarre. If you like to just chill and drink a big glass o’ red with your girls then why not try a wine bar? We have a separate article on Montreal wine bars which you should check out if this is more your jam. Although out of all them that I’ve been to Le Comptoir Charcuterie et Vins is pretty great in my books.

2. Where To Dance

After you drink, you have to dance or else your not experiencing the MTL nightlife properly. And while Tokyo and Café Campus are fun, I feel like it’s not ideal to make your friends wait in line or be in a gigantic/cramped club space they are unfamiliar with. So a smaller scale place is most likely going to be a better option. Salon is SO fun and they play great old school music. But that being said, if I’m going dancing with my girls, without fail we always end up a Pinq Taco. It never fails to please.

3. Where To Eat

I mean, the amount of food porn we post should illustrate to you the importance of a good meal in Montreal. When you take your friends out for brunch -which you will because you live in Montreal and what else are you meant to do when you’re hungover- I’m gonna say to go to L’Avenue. It’s classic but so Montreal. Their French toast selection is stupid good. And if you slept through appropriate brunch hours (it happens), then I’d suggest the Deville Diner Bar for dinner. The food is ridiculous and the 50’s set up is just so cute.

4. Where To Chill

If your friends come up, of course you need some time for chillin’ and some gossipin’. My two favourite cafes to do go to for this exact purpose are Café Neve and Café M. They have cozy interiors, good coffee and (most importantly) BOMB ASS COOKIES. No juicy conversation is complete without some cookie goodness to fuel yourselves.

5. Where To Sight See

Yeah okay Old Montreal is beautiful but in the winter it’s cold and windy and I just don’t have the energy to walk all the way down there. I prefer looking at cityscapes anyways. Saint Denis is a great place to “sight see” because it has cute shops, restaurants and store fronts. Same goes for the Village although I would recommend to save that for summer visitors. Something about walking through the village in the summer just gives off the vibe of a festival.

6. Where To Shop

Lastly, when y’all are ready to go out and spend the dough, I beg of you to skip Saint Catherine’s street. Honestly, every place on that strip is a chain you can find in any other city. Vintage shopping here is prime as eff, and even if your friends don’t have an outrageous style, it’s still nice to look at all of the pretty clothes. Friperie Saint Laurent has amazing pieces, but they can cost a lot. So if you guys are saving on cash, you can never go wrong with our old friend Eva B.
