So here’s the thing about Montreal, in case you didn’t already know: we have a very eclectic and groundbreaking music scene. Break-out acts in all genres of music keep up the cultural trend that makes the city a must-visit place worldwide, but the underground scene is the reason that the locals are proud to be Montreal music lovers. Here is a list of 8 recent favorites of mine; check ‘em out & make sure you don’t miss their upcoming shows around MTL!
1. Arcade Fire
I would be a terrible Montrealer if these guys didn’t top my list. Arcade Fire are constantly showing their fans just how many ways they know how to make awesome music, and I have to admit that I’m all kinds of excited for them to release their highly anticipated new album ‘Reflektor’ on October 29th 2013.
Listen to 'The Suburbs'
2. The Barr Brothers
The Barr Brothers represent Montreal folk music like no one else can, and you don’t want to miss out on the pure energy and passion of their live shows in their hometown. They don’t have any Montreal tour dates lined up, but they are playing surrounding areas throughout November!
Listen to 'Old Mythologies'
3. Adventure Club
These days, it seems like the “Montreal must” on a Saturday night is New City Gas for some good electro/dance/house/trance/you name it music. Adventure Club is not only one of the big names from our city; they’re spinning here on November 2nd at NCG!
Listen to 'Gold' ft. Yuna
4. The Stills
These guys have been around since the turn of the decade, and they’re still making quality rock music. Their songs have such a classic, unforgettable feel to them, it’s no wonder their fans keep coming back for more.
Listen to 'Lola Stars and Stripes'
5. Motel Raphaël
These gals only have a couple songs out right now, but over the summer they launched an Indiegogo campaign of $5,000 to record their debut album and got completely funded. Their music is fun, they play Montreal ALL the time and their shows are totally worth checking out.
Listen to 'Ghosts'
6. The Franklin Electric
Their song ‘Old Piano’ didn’t win the 2012 Nashville songwriting competition for nothing. These guys have talent; lyrically and, just, everywhere. The fact that they aren’t better known still boggles my mind. Catch their shows on November 12th and 24th in Montreal!
Listen to 'Old Piano'
7. Folly & The Hunter
There is a musical depth to Folly & The Hunter that absolutely astounds me. They have a way of blending powerful melodies and instrumentals with soft vocals that really resonates with listeners.
Listen to Moth in the Porchlight'
8. Half Moon Run
Half Moon Runs willl give you ALL THE GOOSEBUMPS. They just have the perfect combination of all the musical things that make me so flippin’ proud to say they’re from Montreal. They’re also playing a hometown show on December 6th, don’t miss it!
Listen to 'Unofferable'
