No joke, Montreal's St-Henri is awesome. Not only is it gorgeous, and in the perfect location, but it's also given us some seriously awesome, insanely popular restaurants (Sumac and Satay Brothers, anyone?).
But St-Henri's still got a bunch of hidden gems; places that are just as fantastic as their more popular counterparts. And discovering these spots? Just as satisfying as the delicious meals they serve.
1. Sandwicherie St-Henri
Alright, honestly, at first glance it might just seem like you'll fall in love with this place only if you love sandwiches. But the reality is that Sandwicherie St-Henri will become your new fave if you enjoy delicious food, end of story.
They specialize in some of the tastiest sandwiches you'll ever put in your mouth. Fresh, tasty bready; savoury, fresh fillings; and beyond flavourful salads make up an awesome meal at this St-Henri spot.
And, with fair prices and sandwiches like their Salami Hongrois (with paprika mayonnaise, havarti coleslaw, and salami on moist, tasty pumpernickel bread) and their Vege (featuring a beet panini, goat cheese, pest, and walnuts), there's no possible way you could go wrong.
2. La Luncheonette
Although La Luncheonette opened up fairly recently, you should still absolutely know about it. And if you don't? Then it should be #1 on your list of places to check out.
In fact, drop everything and get yourself there right now - trust me, you won't regret it. St-Henri's La Luncheonette features dishes that rotate on a daily basis (like their Le Mitchell sandwich, featuring mozarella, caramelized onions, and cheddar on challah bread, or their Le Sud Ouest - a hot pulled pork bun with pickles and coleslaw), so you never have to worry about getting the same thing twice in a row.
One thing you can always count on, though? The homemade dishes at La Luncheonette are forever fresh, flavourful, and made with the highest quality of ingredients - so, no matter what you're eating, you're in for a great time.
3. Cafe Frida
You guys might already know that Cafe Frida serves up some of the most delicious churros in the city, but let's take a minute to talk about their seriously delicious Mexican food.
Friends, have you ever tried tacos so delicious you actually, legitimately cry out in real joy? If you haven't, then that's just because you've never tried them at Frida. They're fresh and authentic, with chewy, flavourful tortillas, vibrant and crisp toppings, and savoury, just slightly spicy meats.
If tacos aren't your thing, though, then no worries. Frida serves up a litany of fresh and legit Mexican fare. In particular, their tamales are on a whole level of awesome all on their own.
4. Gracia Afrika
Have you ever tried African food? If you haven't, then I'm sad to say that you've been hugely missing out. But, no worries. Gracia Africa is here to save the day.
This spot has been around for decades, and has been changing the African food game in Montreal ever since. The food here is consistently vibrant, slightly spicy, and bursting with flavour - and always seasoned and cooked to absolute perfection.
A selection of their traditional dishes? Their Mwambé, moist and tender chicken dunked in a fragrant peanut sauce; and their Cabri dishes, featuring tasty chunks of goat meat simmered in spicy, tasty sauce.
Okay, straight up, the pizza here will absolutely change your life. It's got a super unique taste and texture, very much unlike anything else offered in the cit.
Each slice of Adamo's freshly made pizza features crunchy, tasty thin crust, tangy, fresh, vibrant tomato sauce, and piles of tasty cheese, so there's absolutely no way you can go wrong here, no matter what you choose. But, protip? Their pepperoni pizza, with delicious morsels of salty, tasty pepperoni, is super simplistic and incredibly delicious.
6. Marmite Su'l Feu
At this stage in the game, it might seem like you've tried all there is to try from Montreal's culinary scene. Sure, Italian food is awesome, but there are only so many bowls of pasta you can eat without getting a bit bored, right?
Well, friends, that's where Marmite Su'l Feu comes in. Serving up cuisine from Réunion Island, Marmite Su'l Feu is a unique and tasty dining experience unlike any other. Their traditional dishes include tasty, fragrant curries served with moist chunks of meat (like jackfruit, curry shrimp, and rabbit) and crisp veggies on a bed of tasty rice. All the wins? You know it.
7. Deli Sokolow
True talk, the ice cream at this St-Henri spot is beyond amazing... but, to be fair, you can pretty much say that about all the dishes at Deli Sokolow.
This diner features a super casual and welcoming atmosphere, which means no matter what, you're going to feel super comfortable grabbing a bite here. Which is good, because one bite of their food will have you coming back here for more - constantly.
First of all, they offer up a latke poutine (!!) which features delicious, dense, flavourful potato latkes drenched in yummy gravy and smothered in poutine cheese. If that doesn't sound like your new fave, nothing will, TBH... But, if this isn't your cup of tea, they've also got equally delicious, more traditional food, like potato knishes, egges Benedict, burgers, smoked meat, and tons of other super fresh, super yummy choices.
If you like Japanese food, then you're going to fall in love with Nozy. Actually, if you like food in general, Nozy's going to quickly become your new fave.
Although their menu changes seasonally, whatever you take is pretty much guaranteed to be mind-blowing. Everything, from their buttery, chewy chunks of sashimi to their crispy, moist, perfectly seasoned fried chicken, is served up incredibly fresh and tasty.
Ever stumble upon a place that's got it all? Awesome drinks, delicious food, and ambiance that won't quit, and super fair prices? Well, if you've been to Ludger, then you can proudly say that yes, you've been to a spot that's got everything - and you loved it.
Because, seriously, it's very hard not to love Ludger. Their food is out of this world (they've got deliciously unique dishes, such as ceviche featuring focaccia chips and sour cream, and grilled quinoa with whipped cheese, tomatoes, and black garlic puree), and they've got some incredibly tasty and creative cocktails.
Plus, their friendly, trendy vibe makes Ludger the perfect spot to chill with friends and grab a bite; for a date; for a cute gathering, or for anything, pretty much.
10. Cafe Joe
Brunch on point, life on point. And if you're down to have some seriously on point brunch, then you're going to want to head to Cafe Joe.
This spot serves up awesome dishes that are consistently fresh, cooked perfectly, and are bursting with flavour. And while their regular dishes are awesome (their breakfast burrito is a king among breakfast food options, trust), their vegetarian dishes are seriously fresh, crisp, and so tasty that it kind of ruins you for all other vegetarian food. It's just that good, TBH.
