Halloween may have been postponed this year but that doesn't take away from the fact that it's nearly time to take down those Halloween decorations and replace them with Christmas villages. It's time to celebrate a new holiday season with even more lights and an even bigger event. Illumi Cavalia, the world's largest sound and light show officially opens this Friday, November 1.
UPDATE: Due to inclement weather, Illumi has postponed its opening to November 8.
More than 10 million lights will light up the sky in Laval, bringing to life eight ethereal-themed worlds for guests to discover. The event is brought to us by the creators of Cavalia and takes up over 40,000 square metres — that's nearly the size of six football fields — of holiday festivities jammed in.
As reported earlier, smack dab in the middle of Illumi is the Tree of Lights, a massive 47-metre tall Christmas tree adorned with 28,000 sparkling bulbs. You don't even have to pay to see it; as tall as the Statue of Liberty, the tree can be seen from kilometres away.
But you probably won't mind shelling out the $18.50 entrance fee just to experience everything Illumi has to offer. There's really nothing quite like it in the world. It's like Vegas and Santa did a whole lot of acid together one night and came up with their dream show.
As you walk down the pathway into the Dazzling World of Lights you'll be met with worlds themed after the African Savanna, Santa's North Pole home, Japan of yesterday, a European carrousel square, a mixture of the North and South Poles, the America of Excess, and Feliz Navidad.
In Dreaming of the Star, there is also a giant screen that blends in with the night sky and projects a "luminous tale that will take you deep into a magical quest to pick the brightest star in the heavens."
Illumi Cavalia isn't only a world-class multimedia show, there's also a Christmas market where you can indulge in every type of consumerism known to Christmas. Local artists, merchants and craftspeople set up shop in the village to appease every shopping need you could possibly have.
After buying Christmas gifts, you can relax by the outdoor fire pit while you sample some of the gourmet restaurant and food truck treats. Everyone from La Maison Gourmande to La Shop à Poutine will be in attendance, ensuring that your comfort food cravings are satisfied.
When: Starts November 8;* 4 p.m.-10 p.m.
Where: 2805 boul. du Souvenir, Laval
Cost: $18.50 for adults / $16.50 for those 65+ / $15.50 for students ages 13 to 21
