Spring may be dull this year but Montreal-area residents can still add some colour to their homes with fresh flowers. In light of the extraordinary circumstances, Tulipes.ca is offering drive-through tulip pick-up service at both its Laval and South Shore locations. Its popular self-pick activity, where visitors can wander its colourful fields and choose their own flowers, will not be happening.
Instead, tulip-lovers can purchase bouquets online and drive by the farms to receive their orders.
The Tulipes.ca team will place the flowers in clients' trunks to avoid contact. They also promise to follow strict hygiene measures.
According to the company website, a bouquet of 30 assorted tulips goes for $20.
Each year, Tulipes.ca produces "more than 500,000 multicoloured tulips" in "fields of flowers as far as the eye can see," says its Facebook page.
The vernal celebration attracts visitors from throughout the province with views that are otherwise uncommon to Quebec.
In normal years, the self-pick event is a welcome escape from the dreary grey cityscape.
But the drive-through service at least makes it possible for people in Greater Montreal to experience a slice of springtime cheer.
According to Psychology Today, the presence of plants in the home can have myriad effects on mental health and well-being, including heightened focus and "stress reduction."
Flowers are perhaps more urgently needed this year than ever.
Tickets are not yet on sale, but those interested should stay tuned to the Tulipes.ca website.
In the meantime, Montrealers can enjoy photos from years past and dream about future opportunities to frolic in flower fields.
The alteration to the Tulipes.ca concept speaks to wider changes coming to the Montreal area this spring and summer.
Through festivals and other large cultural and sporting events are cancelled through August, Mayor Plante has said that the city will unveil a plan so that residents can still enjoy some summertime activities while following recommendations from public health authorities.
