This Canadian Man Gave Up His Career To Live In A Tree House In Costa Rica

I have never personally met Chris Hawk, but I've been following him on social media for a while now. His story is so incredibly inspiring, I just had to share it with our readers.

He's been a successful model working in the fashion industry and traveling extensively for the last 18 years until one day he got fed up and decided to move to Samara, Costa Rica in 2012. He found a property with two small homes and a pool, renovated them, then built a fully loaded 750sqft treehouse out back where he now lives. Chris rents out the homes for vacation rentals and hosts yoga, surf, meditation and adventure retreats. Talk about living the life!

What was your life like before you moved to Costa Rica? was good, but a little too fast paced. I was born in B.C so I have that innate chilled vibe, working in the fashion industry and all the major cities of the world was burning me out!

A lot of people want to run away from the corporate lifestyle and live by the ocean, but very few actually have the guts to do it. What gave you that push to follow through?

Being blessed with extensive travel with my work at the time allowed me to see the world at large and find what type of lifestyle resonated most with me. Once the opportunity presented itself to break away, I had no hesitations on how to do it and where to go.

Describe your life in Costa Rica.

It's "Pura Vida" as they say (Pure Life). I have a small vacation property here that I rent out to people wanting to have the Costa Rica experience. I teach yoga/meditation a few days of the week or if requested by guests. There is always an adventure here if your open to moving out of your comfort zone.

Do you ever wonder what your life would be like if you haven’t made the move? Do you regret your decision sometimes?

I wondered a few years ago when I was doing the initial ground work on the project, but have moved passed it now. I have nothing but gratitude for the opportunity given to me by this country and it's incredibly warm and welcoming people, wouldn't change it for anything.

Why Costa Rica?

Costa Rica is a very special country, it's situated along some very powerful energetic ley lines. It has no army, one of the most bio-diverse countries in the world and the area I live in is one of only 5 blue zones in the world (source).

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

That's a funny question actually as I tend to live in the moment. I always take a peak into the future to sketch up a general outline of the direction I wish to fly. But we as humans are constantly changing, growing, expanding and letting go. All those constant shifts create new timelines and desires for where we want to go and what we want to create.

Do you miss your Canadian friends and family? How often do you get to see them?

Definitely miss my "framily" (my new word blending friends and family), I have really been blessed with such incredible people, I feel it has been the biggest gift in my life. Luckily many of them come to visit and spend time with me here often. My sister is actually coming down with my nephew next week, it's his first time down and he's freaking out to experience it, we're all very excited.... I was back last September in Vancouver and Toronto.

Has life in Costa Rica changed you as a person or are you still the same Chris Hawk?

I wouldn't say it has changed me, but it has definitely provided me the space, energy and support to let go of old patterns and habits, it's really allowed me to unfold and be my self fully again, like when I was a kid growing up.

What is your biggest dream at the moment?

Biggest dream would be to see humanity start to let go of all the crap it doesn't need. To see it start to move back to a simple way of living, one based on truth, integrity, community.

If you could go back in time and do things differently, what would it be?

I would have came here sooner. ;)

Check out Chris Hawk's rental homes here and here. He's also starting a destination wedding planing business, so keep your eyes open.
