This Is Why The Leaves On The Trees In Montreal Aren't Changing Colours

According to the calendar it's fall. Unfortunately the calendar has no power here, and the weather is just going to keep doing whatever the hell it wants.
We had a heatwave last week and this week we will once again be breakingย the heat record in Montreal.ย

But there's something else fishy going on with the weather (No, not like the Mexican "Fish Rain"). The leaves aren't changing colours!
Normally at this time of the year, the city trees have all turned red, orange and yellow,ย but this year, when you looks aroundย the city, everything is still mostly on the green side.ย
So what's going on?ย
It's actuallyย due to the unseasonably warm temperatures we've been blessed with.
As long as the temperature staysย warm, the tree'sย demand for sugar is very high. And since tree use photosynthesis to turn sunlight into sugar, the trees are producing more chlorophyll to keep the leaves green so they can absorbs as much energy as possible to survive winter.ย
Once the temperature returns to normal this weekend, the leaves should be changing colours pretty quickly.ย
