Justin Trudeau is actually the eldest of three brothers, one of which died tragically in a skiing accident in his prime, at the young age of 23.

Michel Trudeau was on a backcountry skiing adventure with friends in 1998 when he was swept in a split second by an avalanche into a frozen lake where he drowned. His body was never recovered.

Yesterday was Michel Trudeau's birthday, he would have been 43.  Justin Trudeau posted a homage to his little brother his Instagram account and Twitter.

You would have been 43 today, but you’ve been gone 20 years now. I love you, little brother. Happy birthday Miche. pic.twitter.com/wJHnoJ8V1V

It was a simple but heart-wrenching message.  Followers in the thousands from all over the world have been reacting to Trudeau's touching and heartfelt post.

The Tweet alone received 39K likes.  Looks like people everywhere are sending our Prime Minister their condolences.

Some tear-jerking messages like these were shared in response to the post.

I’m no fan of yours @JustinTrudeau...far from it. But this must have been an unimaginably heartbreaking loss for your family and goes beyond politics. Wishing you the best. May he RIP.

A little brother gone too soon, I remember that day and I thought of your mom and dad. How hard it must have been! XX from this Canadian mom 💔

Some followers did not agree that the Prime Minister should be using Social Media as a platform to share a personal message of this nature, and their replies we're a lot harsher.

Neither time nor place, you can certainly disagree with him on the grounds of politics and governance, just maybe don’t do on the day he’s remembering his brother. Be better, we’re Canadian.

Although there are no cut and dry rules for social media, most "regular" people share posts and personal information of this nature with their followers, so why can't politicians? In my opinion, it humanizes them.

In addition, the 1998 death of Michel Trudeau was big news all over Quebec and Canada. I certainly have memories of watching the story on the news as a kid.

It felt as though all of Canada was collectively mourning Michel's death with the Trudeau family. That explains why this post resonated so strongly with Canadians and other Trudeau admirers around the world.
