The little town of Cap-Santé, population 3,400 (as of 2016) and growing, is worth a visit any time of year. A three-hour drive from Montreal, the quaint town sits on the northern bank of the Saint Lawrence River and is hosting the cutest Christmas market. To describe it as 'cute' is an understatement, but is also the most fitting adjective.
Quebec has no shortages of markets come Christmas time. But if you want to do some shopping, get in on the holiday cheer, and hang out in a village that feels like a throwback to yesteryear, and lays claim to what the Globe and Mail called "most beautiful village street in Canada" then you have to visit the Marché du Noël d'Antan à Cap-Santé.
The town's annual Christmas market is considered to be one of the best in the region. Set in front of the Église Sainte-Famille, famed for being the sole remaining church from the French Regime, the market welcomes more than 70 local artisans every year.
For the three-day event, a miniature village is constructed and ornamented with tons of holiday lights and decoration, giving it the warm and magical feel Cap-Santé has become synonymous with.
The market, the first of its kind in Quebec, opens over the weekend of November 29 to December 1 and has a load of events you can take part in.
Legend has it that Cap-Santé got its name when soldiers who were suffering from an unspecified disease magically returned to health when they discovered the village. There are no promises your ailments will be cured while you're here, but this adorable village has got to help the soul.
Along with visiting all of the amazing kiosks, there are also horse carriage rides, animation for the kids, a visit from Santa and his elves, and demonstrations from blacksmiths, musicians, and storytellers.
You can see the full lineup for 2019 on the website.
If you love typical holiday foods like pies (so many pies), roasted nuts, and hot chocolates, then this market is for you.
Starting at 7 p.m. on Saturday, there will also be a free dance party featuring music by Donald Debuc and Normand Legault - so you can dance all that pie away.
A weekend trip to Cap-Santé is an ideal winter getaway for everyone. You can enjoy the small-town feel of a Quebec village celebrating Christmas while only a 45-minute drive from Quebec City, just in case you need a big city feel to counteract all the cuteness.
