There is a town in New England where all your small town Christmas dreams can come true. Look no further than Freeport, Maine and its annual Sparkle Celebration that brings tourists from all over North America to experience the best and biggest in Christmas celebrations. Just the name, Sparkle Celebration, rolls off the tongue and conjures up...well, things that sparkle, and Christmas wonder and laughter and smiles. Has anything that sparkled ever been bad?
A five-hour drive from Montreal, Freeport is home to the L.L Bean flagship store that is open 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, solving all your outdoor recreation equipment related emergencies.
While this coastal town is a shopper's paradise for its hundreds of brand-name outlets, its holiday Sparkle Celebration is really where it's at. The weeklong festivities kick off December 6 with the Parade of Lights down Main Street and a countdown with Santa to bring the famous talking Christmas Tree to life.
No word yet on what the tree has to say.
To add to the overall charm, the street is lined with brick buildings, some dating back to the 18th century. Most of the storefronts all take part in the annual Holiday Decorating Contest giving the town that extra bit of Christmas magic.
The voting is held on Freeport's Facebook page starting December 2. So if you can't make it in person, you can still get a glimpse at some of the designs.
Some of Freeport's signature events include the Sparkle Parade of Lights, the Sparkle Express on the Amtrak Downeaster, and the Jingle Bell Run.
The L.L.Bean store is nearly a Christmas village of its own with a reindeer farm, model train village, giant snow globe you can step into for your Insta photos, a Warming Hut, and its Discovery Forest.
There are loads of free events that celebrate everything Christmas has to offer. There are concerts, the Sparkle Market, holiday movies, horse carriage rides, apple cider tastings and even complimentary wine at some restaurants.
This is the very merriest of Christmas celebrations.
