Unlike Ontario, Quebec Is Not Going To Try And Ban Cell Phones In Schools

Starting in September 2019, students in Ontario primary and secondary schools will no longer be allowed to have cell phones in class. The decision came after the provincial Education Minister said the handheld devices were a "distraction from learning," after 97 respondents supported the ban in a recent public consultation.

So, you might be wondering if other provinces, such as Quebec, will be following Ontario's lead. Well, according to Quebec's Education Minister, it's not going to happen anytime soon.

TL;DR Quebec's Education Minister has announced that the province will not be following Ontario's lead when it comes to banning cell phones in elementary and secondary schools. Instead, Quebec will leave the decision up to teachers and principals. Ontario's plan is being called ineffective and impossible to enforce. More details below.

Education Minister @LisaThompsonMPP announces a cell phone ban is coming to Ontario classrooms

March 12, 2019

Students in the province don't have to worry about ditching their phones in class for the time being, as Quebec has no plans of making any changes to classroom policy.

Quebec's Education Minister, Jean-François Roberge, is a former elementary school teacher. So, if anyone were to know the advantages and disadvantages of cell phones in class, it would be someone who has had experience in the classroom.

Roberge has commented on the issue, saying he does not want to interfere in the classroom with something such as a cell phone ban.

Instead, Roberge believes that the decision should be made by the teacher or principal of the school.

So, although technically Quebec isn't banning cell phones province-wide from elementary and secondary schools, specific schools could introduce a ban if it's something the staff agree to go forward with.

Since Ontario made the decision to ban the cell phones, critics have warned the Ford government that the plan will be ineffective and impossible to enforce.

Stay tuned for more information and to see if any Quebec schools ban cell phones in the future.
