Three people are dead after a lone gunman in Greektown on Danforth Avenue opened fire on several pedestrians. Over a dozen more are wounded, including at least one child.
Police have so far not disclosed a motive for the 29-year-old shooter, who is among the dead.ย
According to The Globe And Mail, his rampage covered blocks of the Toronto neighbourhood before he succumbed to gun shot wounds, either self-inflicted or the result of a stand off with police.
This is the second tragedy for Toronto this year. In April, a man plowed into a crowd with his van with the intention of killing women. 10 people died. It was the single deadlist motor vehicle attack in Canadian history.
This latest attack comes as Toronto deals with a spike in gun violence. Fatalities are double what they were at the same time last year.
With 3 dead, the incident fits official definitions for a mass shooting.
Canadians are, thankfully, unaccustomed to such violence. While the United States suffers weekly, even daily, gun-related tragedies, Canada is often heralded as an alternative, safe from street violence.
Officials have yet to come up with an explanation for the uptick in violence in Canada's largest city.ย
