I just want to preface this review by saying that I am not a vegan or vegetarian. I love meat. And I especially love hamburgers.
When it comes to vegetarian burgers and faux meat alternatives I'm not super familiar with the various ranges of quality out there on the veg market.
However, as a meat eater, I must admit that when I took my first bite of the "Beyond Meat" burger, I was pleasantly surprised. It totally fooled me. If I was blindfolded and asked to guess if the burger was meat-free or not, I could easily have easily guessed that it made with a genuine beef patty.
This is likely due to the fact that the burger is packed with the classic yummy A&W topping, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, mustard, mayo, ketchup. As you chew through each bite, all the typical tangy burger flavors hit you and do a really good job at tricking your palate into thinking you're eating a genuine beef burger.
It's only when you visually zoom in on the grainy texture of the faux meat patty that you realize you're eating a veggie burger.
Although, I'm sad to say that the burger doesn't live up to its main selling point and differentiator. As you can see, it doesn't actually "bleed" as advertised.
Also, at 500 calories per sandwich, this veggie burger is surprisingly calorie dense.
Looking at this veggie burger from a health and calorie perspective, you would be shocked to find out that the Beyond Meat burger packs MORE calories than a classic A&W Teen Burger and a Mama Burger. And not just any calories, fat calories.
The Beyond Meat burger packs 29g of fat! Whereas the Teen burger has only 26g and the Mama burger 20g from fat.
The high fat count is probably because the third ingredient of this highly processed meatless patty is "expeller-pressed canola oil", and a slew of other questionable ingredients you can't pronounce.
Health concerns aside, we all agree, the Beyond Meat burger does taste good. All the members of our team approve of its tastiness levels. Even our editor in chief - who notoriously hates on everything vegetarian - was pleasantly surprised.
In the end, I wouldn't recommend this burger to a meat eater looking for a "healthier" alternative. If you already eat meat, just stick to beef at A&W. That said, it's a great addition to their menu for non-meat eaters looking to get a taste of the A&W experience.
