If you’re enjoying a dish seafood in Canada, there’s a really good chance you’re not eating what you think you’re eating.
Canada is in the middle of a “seafood fraud” crisis, and it has professionals in the restaurant and seafood industries very worried.
In an open letter to Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency posted on HuffPo, a group of concerned Canadians vented about the sorry state of the nation’s seafood.
According to studies referenced by the group, 41% of seafood samples in Canada were mislabelled.
So in almost half of all cases, the seafood you’re eating isn’t what it says it is.
Most of the time, this is a “bait and switch” case, where cheaper fish are subbed in for a pricier variety.
Illegal fishing is also a cause for concern. This is a practice where fish caught illegally make their way into Canada, hurting local fishers while also adding to the issue of global overfishing.
Canada, at the moment, doesn’t have a system of documenting and tracing fish.
The EU does, where fishers must follow strict procedures involving catch documentation, labelling, and tracing of all fish.
If Canada doesn’t implement “robust traceability standards,” says the concerned group, then we’re all going to suffer from more seafood fraud.
