Honestly, I love Labour Day. It's like a really awesome mini-vacation, right at the start of the week, and also for some reason always means the beginning of fall for me. And since fall is my favourite season, you can imagine how much I'm looking forward to Labour Day.

While Labour Day, taking place this year on September 5, is meant to be a day to chill TF out... well, there are still some awesome places in Montreal that are open.

What's Open

  • Most SAQs (click here for more information)
  • The Casino
  • Most pharmacies
  • Some grocery stores
  • Most movie theatres
  • Hospitals
  • Outdoor markets (like Jean-Talon and Atwater Markets)
  • Garbage pickup should mostly continue as normal
  • Parking meters will operate as usual
  • La Ronde, the Biodome, the Botanical Gardens, the Science Centre, the Insectarium, and Planetarium will remain open
  • Restaurants, salons, etc, can remain open if they so choose (so call ahead to make sure)
  • The Insectarium, Botanical Gardens, Science Centre, Biodome, and Planetarium will remain open
  • The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and Pointe-à-Callière Museum will remain open

What's Closed

  • Banks
  • All government (federal and provincial) and most private offices
  • Municipal courts and most city offices
  • Malls
  • Retail stores (like IKEA, Wal Mart, etc)
  • Postal services
  • Some grocery stores
  • Some restaurants

Top 10 Things To Do In Montreal This Labour Day 2016:

  1. Prepare to be enlightened (hah?) and check out the Gardens Of Light exhibit at the Montreal Botanical Gardens.
  2. Stroll through Atwater Market one last time before summer truly ends.
  3. Get yourself to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and check out the Pompei exhibit, up until Labour Day.
  4. Or go to La Ronde with your BFFs for one final adventure before the fall starts.
  5. Stroll through the Gay Village and check out the end of the Montreal Fetish Weekend.
  6. And then admire the Aires Libres art installation before it gets taken down on September 26.
  7. Check out Marche Bonsecours' World Press Photo exhibition.
  8. Or get yourself to the Montreal World Film Festival and check out some film screenings.
  9. Take a walk through Montreal's Saint-Denis street, and hang out at La Grande Terrasse Rouge.
  10. Get yourself to the Insectarium and watch the monarch butterflies migrate to Mexico.
