You Are Probably Owed $500 From The Quebec Government

For once they owe YOU money.
You Are Probably Owed $500 From The Quebec Government

Did you get a bad surprise when you filed your taxes this year?

You're not the only one. Thousands of Quebec residents were supposed to take advantage of a solidarity tax credit but instead they were hit with a bill.

In many cases people were charged up to $500 instead of getting a credit.

And this wasn't because people made mistakes on their returns, the mistakes even appeared on reports filed by accredited accountants.  It was due to a computer error at Revenue Quebec.

250 new agents have been hired to fix the problem.

The spokesperson for Revenue Quebec said he was sorry, they will need time to fix the problem and every case will be handled fairly.

So if you suspect you've been overcharged for your tax return, you can try to contact Revenue Quebec however since everyone is calling at the same time, you will be experiencing an extremely long wait time.

If you're not sure whether you qualify for the solidarity tax credit, here are the conditions:

1. You are 18 or older

or

If you are under 18, you:

  • Have a spouse.
  • Are the father or mother of a child who lives with you.
  • Are emancipated.

2. You are a resident in Quebec.

or

You or your spouse was:

  • A Canadian citizen;
  • A permanent resident
  • A temporary resident or holder of a temporary resident permit

3. You are not entitled to the solidarity tax credit if either of the following situations applies to you:

  • On December 31, 2015, you were confined to a prison.
  • You received the child assistance payment from Retraite Québec.

Revenue Quebec could not say when the glitch will be fixed, or when people will be getting their money back.

Though I'm sure that if it was the other way around and we owed them money, they would operate at lightening speed.
