When news broke of model Rick Genest's death at his home in Montreal, the internet erupted in tributes to the tattooed artist.

Genest's own social media accounts were full of inspirational messages, refreshing self-reflection, and resources for people experiencing economic and emotional difficulty.

Several outlets reported that Genest had died from an apparent suicide. Lady Gaga even tweeted a call for greater attention to mental health resources in response to what she thought was the suicide of her friend, with whom she collaborated for the music video of her song "Born This Way."

But now officials are making clear that they have not yet determined an official cause of death.

In fact, his death may have been the result of a terrible accident.

According to BBC News, Genest's body was found on the ground after a fall from his apartment balcony. He had told his girlfriend he was merely stepping out for a cigarette.

Several people have stated that Genest was in high spirits in the days before his death. Though, of course, outward composure is hardly evidence of internal struggle.

We will have to wait for the results of an investigation to get the final word on Genest's death.

In the meantime, it's always good to remember that there are resources for people who are considering self harm. 24-hour hotlines are available nationwide. Call 9-1-1 if you are in need of immediate assistance.
