Montreal's famous MURAL Festival is well underway across the city, and loads of popular art installations have been popping up left and right. MURAL organizers have unveiled a number of eyebrow-raising festival highlights, including a huge fresco painting by artist Saype on a grassy bit of land at the northeast corner of Mount Royal Park.

The "Beyond Walls" art piece depicts two interlocking human arms, which will only be visible at the park for a "few days." MURAL said Saype's work "stems from a desire to share a positive message of solidarity and collective effort around the world by symbolically creating the largest human chain ever realized."

Montrealers will pay a little more to use the city's popular bike-sharing service this year. BIXI Montreal prices are going up in 2023. The Montreal Executive Committee approved the hikes during its February 22 meeting. Despite the increases, seasonal BIXI pass subscribers will still benefit from a pre-season deal.

Those who sign up for a season-long subscription between March 15 and April 15, inclusive, will pay $89 before tax. That's $6 more than the 2022 pre-season price, but $10 less than the price of a season pass after April 15 this year, $99 before tax. Regular season passes were $92 in 2022.

Forget the usual silver-and-red BIXIs this summer and try to find one of the dozens of eye-catching custom bikes decorated by MURAL Festival street artists that are hitting stations across the city on June 9! Artists Mono Sourcil, Chien Champion, La Charbonne, Aless MC and Zephyr have transformed 45 bicycles into vibrant, rideable works of art. The BIXI and MURAL collaboration comes as the bike-share service celebrates 50 million trips in Montreal and the street art festival marks its 10th edition.

"Using the bikes like canvasses was a natural extension of the festival, which aims to make art more accessible in the city," MURAL Festival General Manager Pierre-Alain Benoit told MTL Blog.

Two Montreal city councillors are calling on BIXI to bring self-service electric scooters back to the city by 2023. Alba Stella Zúñiga Ramos of Mercier–Hochelaga-Maisonneuve and Stéphanie Valenzuela of Côte-Des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce made a joint statement outside of City Hall on Tuesday saying the popularity of e-scooters has gone up and more than half of Montrealers want to see a return of the motorized mode of transportation.

It has been just under three years since a failed 2019 pilot project saw rentable scooters booted from the city. Within weeks of the scooters being introduced en masse by the two companies, Bird and Lime, many were destroyed and dumped around town. One was even launched into the Lachine Canal.

Montrealers clearly love BIXI bikes, as illustrated by the company's record-breaking statistics for the 2021 season, which has just come to an end. If you have any doubts about that love, just take a look at the 5.8 million trips taken over the year.

Alexandre Taillefer, chairman of the board of directors of BIXI Montreal, called the company's historic figures "a testament to the ever-growing importance of the bike-sharing service, particularly the popularity of the growing number of stations and electrically-assisted bicycles."

As summer winds down, so does the BIXI Montréal season. If you've been relying on the bike-sharing system to get around over the past five months, you may be wondering when you'll have to start using other modes of transit. Remember waiting for busses? Ugh.

The answer is November 15, which is when the BIXI season ends. Bixi says the bikes are taken off the network that day, and moved into storage in a warehouse in Rosemont-La Petite Patrie so they can "spend the winter warm inside."
