The fact is, it's going to be -40 C in Montreal soon no matter how much you cry about it. And arguably, one of the worst parts of winter is getting smacked with a huge Hydro-Québec bill just because you wanted to stay warm in your own house.

Here in Quebec, we may enjoy the lowest electricity rates in the country, but the gap will be getting a little smaller this year if Hydro Quebec gets their way.

Quebec's ice storm of 1998, I remember like it was yesterday. I was sitting in my first 9th grade French class back after the Christmas Holidays, when we were all told to go home because the freezing rain was getting out of control. What came after was in my memory, a really fun time because we had 2 weeks off class, where I played about 400 hours of Pokemon Blue. That said, our family had access to a generator for most of it, so we were pretty lucky. For many thousands of other people in the province of Quebec, however, that was not the case and it was an almost unreal ordeal. This video truly illustrates the devastating impact the experience was many Montrealers.

Tesla has launched a device called Powerwall, it generates electricity using solar panels and powers your home so that you can finally be independent from the power companies. Although it still requires a source to charge. Even if you use too much electricity for the Powerwall to handle, you'll only be paying low evening rates. It comes in both 10 kWh and 7 kWh  weekly cycle models. Both are strong to power most homes during peak evening hours, but if you want to go totally off grid,  multiple batteries can be installed to provide enough energy.

The City of Montreal tends to let elements of its infrastructure deteriorate slowly, until they have no choice left but to overhaul them from scratch. Which is why it's surprising to hear that they will be attacking a project in advance in order to avoid problems and benefit Montreal in the long run.

The city plans on spending $110 million to replace all of the light bulbs in the city. That means every single lamp post in the city (over 100,000) will be upgraded with LED bulbs.

Well it's no secret that our hydro bills have been much bigger this year. I myself had a mini heart-attack when I noticed that the rate I paid between January and March was nearly twice as high as last year's. Sure it's colder outside, but how can that possibly translate to such a massive increase. And if I'm suffering, I can't even imagine how those with bigger properties are feeling.
