If it feels like a trip to the emergency room in Quebec takes all day, you're not alone. And while the province's long hospital wait times are not exactly breaking news, a new report shows just how much worse the wait is here compared to the rest of the country.

According to fresh data from the Montreal Economic Institute (MEI), the median ER stay in Quebec is now 5 hours and 23 minutes — the longest in Canada by a long shot. For context, that's almost double the wait in Newfoundland and Labrador, where patients spend just 2 hours and 45 minutes on average.

An Instagram story recently posted to social media by a medical student shows stretchers set-up in the Montreal Jewish General Hospital garage.

Despite its caption remarking, "So many patients that we have reached [the point] of receiving [patients] in the hospital garage," the hospital clarified that this protocol is not related to Quebec's surging hospitalizations.

Projections from an October 7 report by L'Institut national d'excellence en santé et services sociaux (INESSS) suggest that some hospitals in Quebec — particularly those in Montreal and nearby regions — could reach capacity by November if the COVID-19 transmission rate remains constant or rises.

This includes hospitals in Montreal, Laval, the Laurentians, Lanaudière and Montérégie.

However, the report says hospital capacities could be adjusted to meet increasing needs.
