The City of Montreal announced Monday that it's supporting an initiative led in part by the Native Women's Shelter to offer homeless Montrealers a place to shelter in the evening. The heated outdoor centre is going up in downtown's Cabot Square. 

According to a press release, the tent will be dedicated to the memory of Raphaël Napa André, a homeless Innu man who tragically died outdoors in Montreal in the evening of January 16.

The issue of finding shelter for Montreal's homeless population has definitely been on people's minds in the last few weeks, especially with the Quebec government's curfew and the lack of an exemption for those living on the street. An Innu man died on the night of January 16 near a shelter due to the cold, which many say could have been avoided.

Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante took to Instagram on January 24 to announce that Stade De Soccer De Montréal will be converted into a 24-hour shelter for those who need it, called La Porte Ouverte.

A homeless man tragically died outside during Quebec's curfew hours on the night of January 16 in Montreal, according to multiple reports.

In a Facebook post, The Open Door, a shelter and service centre for homeless and low-income Montrealers, said the man's name was Raphael. Nakuset, director of the Native Women's Shelter of Montreal, identified him as Innu in a tweet on Monday.*
