things to do in downtown montreal

Downtown Montreal will smell exceptionally inviting at the end of the month. Café Collectif is brewing up a storm with a coffee festival featuring over 30 local roasters. Café Pista, Zab, and a caffeinated conga line of specialty coffee vendors from Fantôme and Rabbit Hole to Saint-Henri and Nucleus are ready to spill the beans on what sets their brews apart.

The festival, from May 31 to June 1, will also pack a punch with interactive barista workshops. Hosted by experts from Edika and Lelit, the sessions at the Société des arts technologiques (SAT) promise to upgrade your home coffee game from amateur pourer to pro espresso puller. It’s a hands-on opportunity for attendees to operate professional-grade machines under the guidance of seasoned baristas.

The mysterious top floor of Montreal's Eaton Centre has been silent for almost a quarter century. But the well-preserved space that once housed a magnificent Art Deco restaurant will soon spring back to life with the clink of glasses and murmur of diners.

Sealed like a time capsule since its close in 1999, Le 9e is a vision of streamlined shapes and bold colours, designed by French architect Jacques Carlu, whose other major works include the Palais de Chaillot in Paris.

Downtown Montreal is hosting a night where anime soundtracks and classical music collide faster than Naruto can devour a bowl of ramen. This fall, Symphonic Anime will see over 100 musicians play orchestral renditions of Naruto, Attack on Titan, and Demon Slayer themes, among other anime classics. Some attendees will also have a once-in-a-lifetime chance to meet the maestros behind the original scores.

Three of Japan's most revered anime composers will be in attendance: Yasuharu Takanashi, known for his work on Naruto and Fairy Tail; Yuki Hayashi, the musical genius behind My Hero Academia; and Makoto Miyazaki, famed for his compositions in SPY x FAMILY and One Punch Man. VIP ticket holders will have the chance to meet and greet the creators whose work has defined a generation of anime. VIP tickets are priced at $161.35, while regular tickets start at $46.

"Sonic Symphony" is gearing up to dash onto the stage in Montreal. It's a supersonic spin through the soundtracks of the world's favourite blue hedgehog, combining live music with visual storytelling. The event will celebrate three decades of SEGA's Sonic the Hedgehog by visually reliving iconic moments that shaped the beloved video game character.

The video game concert is set to take place on March 24, 2024, at 7 p.m at the Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier in Place des Arts. As musicians, including keyboardist Derek Dupuis and bassist Louis A. Ochoa, weave their sonic magic, the big screen behind them will light up with memorable scenes from Sonic's creation. From his pixelated beginnings to his latest high-definition adventures, Sonic's journey will be accompanied by a full symphony orchestra.

It's impossible not to see movement in the sweeping strokes of Vincent Van Gogh's masterpieces. Montreal's new downtown OASIS Immersion exhibit Van Gogh: Distortion brings that motion to life, exchanging paint for pixels in three massive floor-to-ceiling light shows at the Palais des Congrès.

I was skeptical about just how immersive the experience would be, but the experience merges the maestro's magic with new technology, bringing his 19th-century works into the current millenium. It makes for a perfect rainy day activity. You can experience all types of artistically-rendered weather while comfortably seated inside.

Downtown Montreal's Christmas market, the Grand Marché de Noël, is making its long-awaited return — and it's bringing part of Alsace with it.

This holiday season, the market in the Quartier des spectacles will include a makeshift neighbourhood inspired by the French region known for its German roots and charming medieval architecture.
