A Montreal neighbourhood just received a lot of love in a brand-new ranking of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world — and it might not necessarily be where you'd expect.

Earlier this year, Time Out released the latest edition of its annual ranking of the coolest neighbourhoods on earth. These spots are described as the perfect mix of a city's culture, community spirit, nightlife, and food—all packed into one trendy, walkable district.

After naming Montreal's rue Wellington as the coolest street in the world, Time Out is sharing even more love for Montreal with yet another accolade. In a recent list of the world's "40 Coolest Neighbourhoods", Downtown Montreal managed to snag a spot in the 2023 ranking.

"The world’s coolest neighbourhoods this year is, therefore, places with big personalities. Each area’s diversity is reflected in its food, culture and festivals. Community is key: locals have banded together to rebuild their neighbourhood after disaster, to protest the demolition of much-loved cultural venues or simply to create spaces where people can come together and have some fun," Time Out said.

After naming rue Wellington the coolest street in the entire world, Time Out is back with more accolades for Montreal, but this time they're not for Verdun. In their list of the world's 51 coolest neighbourhoods, the ever-popular hipster mecca of Mile End snagged number five, just behind Ridgewood in New York City.

The list also includes one neighbourhood each from Toronto and Vancouver, but these spots lag far behind Mile End (score!). In the top three spots are areas in Mexico, Portugal and Cambodia, in case anyone was worried about a North American sweep. But what makes Mile End such a strong competitor against the best neighbourhoods in the world?
