Finding good work experience may be more difficult this year than ever before for students in Quebec. But thanks to the complicated and deeply flawed concept of statehood as we know it today, at least one sector is as reliable as ever: border security. The Canada Border Services Agency has summer jobs available for students through the Federal Student Work Experience Program (FSWEP).

Applications are now open for summer 2021.

Student border services officers (SBSOs) work "to determine the admissibility of people and goods" at airports and mail processing centres across Canada.

In Quebec, SBSOs can be found in Dorval, Montreal, and Quebec City.

To be eligible, students must be enrolled full-time at a cégep, college or university, "be returning to full-time studies in the next academic term" and "meet the minimum age requirement to work in the province or territory where the job is located."

The CBSA also says "preference may be given to students studying in a field related to the job, such as: criminology, law, safety/security studies, psychology, sociology, customs border services or police studies."

The pay is pretty generous, ranging from $15.40 to $33.58 per hour, depending on the students' level of study.

College and cégep students are at the bottom of the pay ladder.

But undergrad and master's students get starting wages of $16.49/hour and $22.04/ hour, respectively.

The highest wages, $33.58/hour, are reserved for doctorate students.

Applicants will undergo a rigorous vetting process, including security and medical clearance. Accepted applicants will then undergo "physically demanding" training.

However, SBSOs are not given firearms.

The work is demanding, as well, sometimes involving weekend and holiday shifts. Students are also responsible for keeping their uniforms tidy.

The term of employment is  to
