One thing tourists often remark on when visiting Montreal is how "old" the city feels.

Whether that's a compliment or not isn't always clear— are they admiring the charm of the Old Port or commenting on the pothole-ridden streets across the island? Either way, Montreal's rich history is undeniable, and it's not just in the architecture. It's also in the city's restaurants, many of which have been serving up local favourites for generations.

Two Emily in Paris (Netflix) stars were spotted in Montreal recently, giving fans a taste of the Québécois spinoff we never knew we needed: Julien and Luc in Montreal.

Between press events, French actors Samuel Arnold and Bruno Gouery toured Montreal landmarks, picked sides in the city's legendary bagel battle and filmed their first time trying poutine — an experience which left one of them confused and the other converted.

The oldest Montreal restaurants are like a secret recipe passed down through generations — familiar and satisfying with a touch of surprise. From smoked meat that's stood the test of time to bagels that have rolled through the decades, the city's longest-standing food joints serve meals as rich in history as they are in flavour.

There's a centuries-old inn that's seen more history than most textbooks, a no-frills diner where hot dogs reign supreme, and a bagel shop where the ovens hardly cool down. Here are some of Montreal's most seasoned establishments where you can get a taste of tradition:

Simu Liu, most known for his roles as Ken in Barbie and the Marvel hero Shang-Chi, took a break from the action to share his culinary conquests in Montreal. The Canadian actor revealed which Montreal restaurants he's visited and loved, and one spot, in particular, received a lot of extra admiration from the Kim's Convenience star.

Liu recently sat down with MTL Blog to discuss his latest campaign as Cheetos first-ever Canadian partnership. With his go-to being Flaming Hot Cheetos, the actor admitted that the only way to really get rid of that orange dust is to lick it off. Luckily for Liu — and lucky for us in the conversation that followed — finger-licking-good foods are something he's familiar with.

No matter which side of the great Montreal bagel debate you fall, or which local hole-in-the-wall (or the dough) bakery you prefer, there's nothing quite like digging a warm, fragrant ring out of a brown paper bag, ripping it into pieces and shoving each one into your mouth with vigour.

Bagels are part of the city's history, a staple for city residents and a must-try for visitors (both singer Dua Lipa and Queer Eye's Antoni Porowski know). There are long-time bakery rivalries and even some new competish with Kettleman's joining the bagel-making fray (it may be confusing, but there's now a Montreal shop run by the Ottawa-based purveyor of Montreal-style bagels).

Trying to determine the best bagel in Montreal is no easy task, especially when the two giants in the field are so darn close to each other — and not just physically. Saint-Viateur and Fairmount Bagel both hold massive weight and enjoy sizeable followings within the city and outside of it, but no one has successfully decided which bagel reigns supreme.

I set out to do my own comparison in order to reveal which spot was better — all while attempting my first taste test video. But despite some new information (and a crash course in filming content), the verdict just reminded me of home.

Canadians are hungrier than ever for Montreal bagels and rightly so, the sesame-crowned golden dough rings are a city treasure.

Google Trends shows online searches for the local specialty have been spiking over the past year across the country. But one bakery, in particular, has been garnering a majority of the attention.
