The Government of Canada recently announced a brand new federal benefit that could affect over 600,000 Canadians.
Following the government's 2024 Budget announcement on April 16, eligible Canadians can soon expect to receive up to $2,400 from a new disability benefit.
The Department of Finance Canada released its plan for a "stronger social safety net," which includes the launch of the Canada Disability Benefit.
In addition to delivering $200 billion over the next 10 years to strengthen Canada's public health care, and delivering the Canadian Dental Care Plan, the federal government is also dishing out $6.1 billion over the next six-year, and $1.4 billion ongoing, to supplement provincial and territorial benefits, which will increase the financial well-being of over 600,000 working Canadians with disabilities.
"No matter your age, your income, or your circumstances, every Canadian deserves to feel secure in the knowledge that they will get the care and support they need. Because this is what Canadians do; they take care of each other," the Budget 2024 report says.
According to the report, the Government of Canada will begin providing payments to eligible Canadians starting in July 2025, following "successful completion of the regulatory process and consultation with persons with disabilities," the federal government indicated.
To guarantee eligible Canadians are able to access the Canada Disability Benefit and mitigate the expected financial hurdle in applying for the benefit, the Budget 2024 allocates $243 million over six years starting in 2024-25, along with $41 million annually thereafter, to cover the expenses of necessary medical forms for the Disability Tax Credit application.
Per Budger 2024, eligible Canadians, aged 18 to 64 with disabilities, will receive $2,400. To ensure quick delivery and consistent eligibility nationwide, the Canada Disability Benefit would require a valid Disability Tax Credit certificate.
Additionally, the government plans to collaborate with individuals with disabilities, healthcare professionals, and tax experts to enhance accessibility and reduce administrative hurdles in obtaining the Disability Tax Credit certificate.
"The Canada Disability Benefit establishes an important support for persons with disabilities and will ensure a more fair chance for future generations of persons with disabilities."
