The Canada Child Benefit (CCB) is a non-taxable payment designed to help qualifying families in Canada, and with inflation hitting new highs, rent going up and the cost of groceries skyrocketing, it's safe to say that many Canadian families dealing with economic uncertainty are looking for some financial breathing room.
It's important to verify if you're eligible for the Canada Child Benefit through the Canada Revenue Agency, as you could be entitled to over $7,000 in 2024.
Here's everything to know about the Canada Child Benefit, eligibility, payment amounts and dates.
What is the Canada Child Benefit?
The Canada Child Benefit (CCB) is managed by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and constitutes a tax-free monthly allowance provided to qualifying families to assist with the expenses associated with raising children below the age of 18.
The CCB encompasses potential additions such as the Child Disability Benefit and relevant provincial and territorial initiatives.
Who is eligible for the Canada Child Benefit?
According to the Canada Revenue Agency, you are eligible for the Canada Child Benefit if you meet the following criteria:
- You live with a child who is under 18 years of age
- You are primarily responsible for the care and upbringing of the child
- You are a resident of Canada for tax purposes
- You or your spouse or common-law partner must be any of the following:
- a Canadian citizen
- a permanent resident
- a protected person
- a temporary resident who has lived in Canada for the previous 18 months, and who has a valid permit in the 19th month other than one that states "does not confer status" or "does not confer temporary resident status"
- an individual who is registered, or entitled to be registered under the Indian Act
The CRA also indicates that you are ineligible to receive the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) for a foster child during months when Children's Special Allowances (CSA) are provided.
However, you may qualify for the CCB if you reside with and care for a child participating in a kinship or close relationship program supported by the governments of Canada, a province, a territory, or an Indigenous governing body, as long as CSA is not granted for that particular child.
How much does the Canada Child Benefit pay?
The CRA calculates and adjusts the Canada Child Benefit payment amounts depending on the number of children in your care, the age of your children, and your adjusted family net income.
If your family's net income is under $34,863, you can receive the maximum amount for each child. Per the CRA, the payment amounts are as follows:
- Children under six years of age: $7,437 per year ($619.75 per month)
- Children between six and 17 years of age: $6,275 per year ($522.91 per month)
