I'm a Canadian living in the south of France, and after some intensive (and sometimes embarrassing) research, I've discovered major differences between our versions of French.

I grew up surrounded by at least some French, and I’d spent some time visiting Montreal in my early 20s — so I had some idea of what I was getting myself into. But when I landed in France, I realized I had not simply crossed an ocean. I had entered a parallel French universe.

I'll be honest — when it comes to snacking, I've never been a sweet person. Give me something salty every time. Ideally, a big, heaping bowl of ultra-crispy Canadian potato chips.

The flavours! The crunch! The saltiness! Positively divine. And because I consider myself nothing if not an intrepid journalist (particularly when food is involved), I figured it was time to settle the debate once and for all: which Canadian chips are the best?

During my recent trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, I expected to experience a bit of culture shock. It was my first time in the country, after all, and my Spanish was rusty as hell. I figured it would take at least a week for me to get a feel for things.

For the first three days, most of the guests seemed to be Mexican and Canadian – and while we were different in many ways, we shared the same general traits of being community-oriented, considerate of others in shared spaces, and gracious to the staff.

If you're a Quebecer who's ever tried to use your French in France, you already know how it goes.

I braced myself at the counter of a Parisian pâtisserie, ready to order a pain au chocolat — or is it a chocolatine here?

If you ask me, Quebec is Canada's sexiest province. I'm from B.C., which is objectively the country's most basic b*tch province, and Ontario is the most Kendall-Roy-From-Succession province — but we don't have time to unpack that right now.

What I will say is that Quebec has always had a bit of mystique to me. As someone who grew up in English-speaking Canada, it's one of those places you hear about constantly — the French-adjacent culture, the iconic food, the Montreal nightlife — but actually experiencing it feels like a different story.

Do I have to pay for my meal on a date? Shoot, I don't have time to look this up before he arrives!

That was my initial thought when I stood at the counter of Le Central during my first date at 36. After 13 years in a relationship, including eight years of marriage, I suddenly found myself in the dating world for the first time and realized I had absolutely no idea what I was doing.

My recent trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, was a trip full of firsts for me. It was my first experience of tourism in Mexico, my first time swimming in the Pacific Ocean, and my first time tasting the kind of primo tequila they just don't export this far North.

It's worth noting that I was there for the better part of January, so I got to experience Puerto Vallarta at its full glory before the recent cartel violence. It's such a relief to know that things have returned to normal in the city, and that the locals and expats I got to know there are once again safe.

Canadians have three claims to fame: Hockey. Maple Syrup. And Ryan Gosling.

In fact, during my tenure in America, I have noticed that I am always complimented on one of these three things. Does it feel weird to take personal credit for Ryan Gosling? It does not. Does it feel weird that Canadians have not won the Stanley Cup since 1993? Almost exclusively.

Listen, I'm a proud Canadian, but I'm about to give credit where credit is due. There are some things (I said some!) that the United States just does better, and they're the reasons why I've stayed south of the border.

In honour of my social studies teacher (who was my arch nemesis, by the way), I'm skipping the politics and going straight to the REAL sh*t that people care about (but don't always say out loud).
