Residents of a 90-unit Plateau apartment building received notices stating they must move out for at least seven months due to major repairs and renovations, sounding 'renoviction' alarm bells among tenants and tenants' rights groups.

The building, located at 3485 Avenue Papineau, is owned by Jeremy Kornbluth and Brandon Shiller, who were responsible for the rent hike that forced Le Cagibi out of the Mile End. Shiller's father's real-estate firm — Shiller Lavy Realties — was also recently in the news for hiking up the rent at the Mile End's S.W. Welch bookstore.

With over 20 centimetres of snow falling in the past couple of days, the City of Montreal announced that snow removal season is officially beginning on January 3. 

A statement from the city says that, as of tomorrow, nearly 2,200 snow removal vehicles will start "loading operations" on Montreal's 10,000 km of streets, sidewalks and bike paths, in all its boroughs. Spreading and clearing operations are set to take "as long as necessary to ensure safe travel."

Good news for anyone who's been taking advantage of Montreal's free street parking initiative, which makes parking in front of a meter downtown totally free of charge on weekends. 

The City of Montreal announced on December 23 that the initiative has been extended, so it will end on January 31 rather than December 31.

Montrealers who are worried about where to park during their neighbourhood's snow removal are in luck because over 1,000 free overnight parking spaces in Montreal will be made available during snow removal operations. 

"Some 1,212 parking spaces will be offered in several boroughs during snow loading periods," said Laurent Chevrot, general manager of the Agence de mobilité durable.
