The City of Longueuil has decided to relocate some deer that were overpopulating a local park in Quebec rather than carry out a "control operation," as previously planned, that would see them culled.

Mayor of Longueuil Sylvie Parent announced her decision in a Facebook post on November 23. 

The city received severe backlash and threats from Quebecers in response to its decision to euthanize the problematic deer overpopulating Parc Michel-Chartrand and donate the game meat to local food banks.

Last week, MTL Blog reported that the City of Longueuil is planning to carry out a "control operation" to kill problematic deer that have overpopulated Parc Michel-Chartrand.

A petition opposing the deer culling in Longueuil, which has garnered over 35,000 signatures, emerged online as the Miller Zoo offered to house the deer in Frampton rather than let the game meat be donated to local food banks in Quebec.

During a press conference on October 21, Montreal Mayor Valérie Plante was asked about death threats that she has recently apparently received in an email from a 63-year-old man from Verdun.

If you thought you'd seen more local internet trolls lately, you'd be right. Social media threats are on the rise in Quebec, according to Sûreté du Québec communications director Guy Lapointe.

He tweeted on September 17 that the number of online threats reported to Quebec police has more than doubled in the past year — 713 reports in 2019 versus 1,748 in 2020.
