After the majority of the community supported the initiative, according to Mayor Daniel Côté, camping on Gaspé beaches is banned this year.

"The results of the survey showed moderate but majority support for banning camping on our beaches," said the mayor.

"In order not to relive the situation of 2020, the municipal council has decided to go ahead with a clear rule: it will be forbidden, in 2021, to camp on our beaches and on several parking lots on our territory, in a vehicle, in a tent or with any other means," said the mayor.

Last summer, tourists were blamed for absolutely trashing the beaches in the Gaspé region, with piles of garbage left behind by people who decided to illegally camp out on the beaches.

Camping will be banned until the end of 2021.
