The Government of Canada announced that it would construct a new national monument in honour of Canada's 2LGBTQIA+ community in 2022 and construction is officially underway.
The 2SLGBTQIA+ National Monument will stand as a reminder of the past and ongoing discrimination cast against 2LGBTQIA+ people in Canada, including during the LGBT Purge from the 1950s to the 1990s.
"The Monument will reflect the profound impacts of discrimination experienced by Canada’s 2SLGBTQIA+ communities, as well as celebrate the achievements of those who fought for equality, educate visitors, and inspire hope and change for the future," Canadian Heritage said.
The 2SLGBTQIA+ National Monument will be located in Ottawa at the northeast side of the Wellington Street and Portage Bridge intersection, close to the Ottawa River — roughly 90 minutes from Montreal.

The Thunderhead design was created by Team Wreford and draws on the symbolism of a thunderhead cloud, which "embodies the strength, activism and hope of 2SLGBTQIA+ communities," the federal government shared.
Elements of the monument include a sculpture that creates the imprint of a thunderhead cloud in mirrored tile — giving a disco-ball look to the overall design. The monument will also include a pathway through a landscaped park that traces the history of 2LGBTQIA+ people in Canada.

The area will also include a medicinal garden and orchards, as well as a healing circle ringed with stones hand-picked by Two-Spirit Elders.
The surroundings will also allow for large gatherings, performances and places for quiet reflection, per the Government of Canada. The creation of the new Canadian Monument is mandated by a Federal Court of Canada order, and is set to be complete in 2025.
