Two people have been arrested after a fetus was found dead in a Laval dumpster behind an apartment building on boulevard du Souvenir Monday night.

A nearby resident found the infant in the city's Laval-des-Rapides neighbourhood and reported the discovery to police at around 7:30 p.m., Laval police spokesperson Julie Marois confirmed to MTL Blog.

25 weeks Estimated age of the deceased fetus

The fetus was around 25 weeks old. It was pronounced deceased at the scene, she said. She could not say how long the fetus had been in the dumpster but an autopsy is being performed and the investigation is ongoing.

"The mother was taken to hospital where she was interrogated by members of the major crimes unit," said Marois.

A 44-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman were arrested and will appear in court today.

The man might be charged under article 243 of the Criminal Code of Quebec, which concerns concealing the body of a child, said Marois.

For her part, the woman might be charged under article 242 of the Criminal Code of Quebec, neglecting to get help during childbirth, she said.
