Effective June 4, air travellers returning to Canada who refuse to quarantine in a government-approved hotel can be fined $5,000 — a $2,000 increase from the prior $3,000 fine.

The government has said the mandatory hotel stay itself can cost travellers approximately $2,000 of their own money. In Montreal, approved hotels include the Baymont by Wyndham Montreal Airport, Embassy Suites by Hilton Montreal Airport and Comfort Inn Dorval.

Officials have issued a boil water advisory in the Montreal borough of Lachine. Every household, except the ones in the Saint-Pierre district, is asked to be vigilant and boil tap water for at least one minute before drinking. 

The preventative advisory was posted at around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning. There's no word on when the alert will be lifted.

Ask around, people are seriously concerned about this. Which isn't surprising when you come across reports that say that the place where we get our drinking water is 40,000 times more contaminated than it normally is.

But obviously, we don't just stick a bunch of hoses in the river and use that water directly, the water gets treated first. But the question remains: is the water really that safe to drink?
