The World University Rankings 2025 just dropped and two Canadian schools have outperformed McGill University, securing higher spots in the global rankings.

On October 9, Times Higher Education released its annual list, highlighting the top universities from around the world based on metrics in five key areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement and international outlook. This year, Times ranked more than 2,000 institutions from 115 countries and territories with 185 new entries compared to last year.

Montreal's very own McGill University made a new list of the world's top schools for research, but it turns out two other Canadian universities left it in the dust.

According to a new global ranking, the University of Toronto is the fourth-best university in the world for research, topped only by Harvard, Stanford and University College London. It even beat out research heavyweights like Oxford (5th), Johns Hopkins (6th), Cambridge (9th) and MIT (10th).

Maclean's, a Canadian news publication that covers topics about Canadian politics, popular culture, and current events, released its annual university ranking of the best schools across Canada by faculty awards and McGill University secured the second spot overall. The ranking was based on a five-year tally (2018 to 2022) of the number of full-time professors, per 1,000, who have won national awards.

The World University 2024 ranking dropped, listing the best universities in the world with Oxford, Stanford and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology making up the top three. The ranking highlighted some of the best schools in Canada with the University of Toronto (UofT) beating out McGill University…yet again.

A new ranking of the best universities in the world was released earlier this month, and in addition to a number of Quebec institutions shining through, nearly 20 other Canadian universities managed to make the cut.

The Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), also known as the Shanghai Ranking, dropped its 2023 university ranking, showcasing the best schools across the globe.
