It's almost Lunar New Year in Montreal and the city is getting ready to celebrate in a big way. A free-to-attend market on February 10 will have unique gifts, traditional food, and sweets that give a taste of celebrations across many Asian communities.
From snapping photos in traditional Hong Kong New Year outfits to penning wishes on red paper with a brush and ink, the market offers a hands-on experience of Lunar New Year customs.
Visitors can seek fortune-telling insights with sticks or roll the dice in the classic game of Fish-Prawn-Crab. It's a day-long immersion into the festive traditions that make Lunar New Year a globally celebrated event.
Organized by the Hong Kong Cultural Learning Society in Montreal, the event will embrace the Year of the Dragon, infusing the market with dragon-themed crafts and decorations, celebrating the strength and prosperity that the auspicious year symbolizes.
Over 20 vendors will serve a mix of food, crafts, and cultural items, from two-year cask-aged Japanese soy sauce to Southeast Asian coffee beans and vintage stamps from WWII Hong Kong. You can try mango-pomelo sago dessert, Cantonese shrimp roe noodles, and Southeast Asian coffee beans, and pick up special handmade items, like crochet amigurumi, cards, and stickers.
The majority of sellers will be accepting cash only, and in the spirit of sustainability, bringing your own shopping bag is encouraged.
