Michelin just launched its hotel guide in Canada and 8 Quebec hotels earned coveted 'Keys'
Get out your bucket list, because the best hotels in Canada were just revealed, and eight spots in Quebec earned a prestigious new accolade that officially ranks them among the best in the world.
The Michelin Guide has just brought its brand-new Michelin Key awards to Canada, highlighting the most exceptional hotels across the country.
You've probably heard of the Michelin Stars for restaurants, but this year, for the first time ever, the French tire company introduced the Michelin 'Key' for outstanding hotels — and a handful of Canadian hotels made the cut.
When awarding hotels, Michelin says its selection team considers five universal criteria: excellence in architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the surrounding neighbourhood or setting.
Each Key-awarded hotel must excel in all five of these areas, making them some of the most outstanding places to stay in the world.
Just like with restaurant Stars, hotels in the Michelin Guide are rated on a three-point scale and can earn one Key ("very special"), two ("exceptional") or three ("extraordinary").
Hotels that meet these high standards are often pricey, but Michelin says that's not necessarily the case for every spot on the list. With more than 5,000 accommodations across the globe in this year's selection, there are "options for every style and budget," including "castles, hostels, tents, and ryokans, places with two hundred rooms atop a city skyscraper, and with two rooms tucked inside an ancient watchtower." Wow!
For the inaugural list this year, 33 Canadian spots in six provinces made the cut. British Columbia had the most hotels represented with 11 properties, but Quebec came in a close second with eight spots across Montreal, Quebec City, Baie-St-Paul, Mont-Tremblant and North Hatley. Tying with Quebec was Ontario, also with eight, followed by Alberta with four, and Nova Scotia and Newfoundland with one apiece.
