As the war in Ukraine continues, the response in Montreal has varied, from the heartfelt to the unconventional. One city councillor has been blasting the Ukrainian national anthem from across the street from the Russian consulate. Three local rabbis travelled to Poland to help refugees. There have been fundraisers, demonstrations, and donation drives.

This crisis has brought out the best instincts of many. Unfortunately, it seems to have brought out the problematic views of others.

An official petition to the Quebec government is calling for the designation of Montreal's Chinatown as a heritage site in order to protect it from "an imminent danger of gentrification and real estate speculation." 

Over 1,600 people have signed the petition and are supported by Mayor Valérie Plante, who wrote a letter to the Minister of Culture and Communications, Nathalie Roy, imploring the government to help preserve Chinatown.

After working tirelessly through the COVID-19 pandemic, Quebec nurses will soon have to pay to renew their licenses with the Ordre des infirmières et infirmiers du Québec (OIIQ) — but a petition with over 80,000 signatures says the fee should be suspended this year. 

All registered nurses and nurse practitioners in Quebec must be members of the OIIQ, the regulatory body for nursing in the province. The annual membership fee is due March 15.

A group of concerned parents representing Pour Nos Enfants Montréal has started a petition against the policy requiring Quebec's high school students to wear disposable masks. At the time of writing, the online petition has over 1,200 signatures.

Pour Nos Enfants argues that the Quebec government should allow high schoolers to wear reusable three-ply face masks as a substitute for disposable ones due to the damage that single-use masks may cause to the environment.

An online petition opposing Quebec's new COVID-19 vaccination schedule has garnered 22,545 signatures. 

The petition, created on January 11 by Dr. Marty Teltscher, a microbiologist and infectious disease specialist at Montreal's Jewish General Hospital, urges the government to follow scientific data on administering second doses of the vaccine, as well as the manufacturers' suggested schedule.

The petition, titled "Implementation of Measures to Reduce Food Waste," has received over 5,500 signatures and includes three recommendations to stop the practice of throwing away "viable food."
